Hendricks House -- Classic Upstate NY Country Estate
Hendricks House- Classic Upstate NY Country Estate
A one km drive through the woods, past on old 1700s barn and pond and up to the main house, this home was originally an inn built in the 1700s and reputed to have had George Washington as a guest. A 29 acre estate with pool and multiple entertaining areas and a large country kitchen, the house is an expansive and unique home that provides the ultimate upstate New York living, with the Culinary Institute of America a ten minute drive away as well as picturesque Rhinebeck with its many high end restaurants.
For those looking for an upstate/dutchess county getaway for the family, just two hours drive or train from New York City, this is a truly unique gem of a property. The long drive through the woods to get to the house provides the privacy and romantic setting that is quite unique and is a tremendous experience, no matter what the season!
The 7 bedroom, 5 bath, 10,000 sq. ft. property is a piece of American history, with a hand-chiseled triple height barn and numerous old fireplaces, yet has been modernized to have the amenities and comforts of a 21st century home.
In the house, the entertainment space is second to none. Enter to a vast open floor main reception space lit by delicate chandeliers. The delightfully furnished room has a fireplace, piano, and dining area with a long wooden table that can seat 10.
Off this area is an antique barroom and a large comfortable TV room with 70'' flatscreen. You'll also find a winter sitting room with floor to ceiling bookshelves and a large 1700s fireplace. The antique formal dining room has a fireplace and a preserved small bar area, dating back from when the property was an inn. A third dining space can be found off the kitchen, perfect for breakfast for a casual lunch indoors. The kitchen has two large sinks, one which is inlaid into a center island that provides drawer storage and plenty of space for food prep.
The master bedroom has a king bed, fireplace, adjoining sitting area, and a marbled master bath. Two of the additional bedrooms have king beds, three rooms have queen beds, and the last bedroom contains a twin bed.
Head outside to the covered BBQ that overlooks the heated pool and barn, a picture-perfect setting for family and friends gatherings. In addition to the BBQ grill, this patio area includes a dining table, lots of counter space, a sink, and a small fridge. There are several reclining lounging chairs surrounding the pool deck, creating the perfect oasis for relaxing and rejuvenating.
The 1,000 square foot blue stone terrace set down by the pond provides a special entertainment space with the backdrop of 50 foot high trees. A wooden bridge connects the furnished terrace to the vast green space on the other side of the pond. A one hundred night-light system also provides for a stunning setting in the garden at night!

Beautiful country home
Wow! Where do we begin? The owner, Mr. Murray communicated with us in advance of arrival. He was most gracious. The staff were amazing and very attentive. Pedro cooked a fabulous meal and Lauren was so sweet to assist in our needs. The home and grounds are architectural digest quality and the area offered much to see and enjoy. (Wonderful stay). Dutchess County elegance beyond your wildest dreams
Having fallen in love with Hendricks House after seeing the photos on 3rd Home, we sensibly dialled down our excitement levels and prepared ourselves for disappointment as we rounded the final corner of the lovely 1 km long driveway. As the house came into view, jaws dropped commensurately with the palpable rise in excitement. This is a stunningly beautiful property, just... STUNNING. Like a grand dame, dressed in her white finery, the house commands your gaze falls upon it. Large but by no means ridiculously so, every room in the house is blessed with sympathetic interior design, reflecting the date of the property (late 18th century) yet with contemporary country touches everywhere that make a house a home. The gardens at Hendricks House are, as with all great houses, an extension of the interior. Thoughtful in planning, excellent in execution, a lot of time and effort has clearly gone into the landscaping. Two beautiful ponds form the focal point, with a Monet-esque bridge joining them, and colourful planting adorn the borders and urns to soften the verdant backdrop of the distant woods. At night, from your stone terraced seating area, set as if centre stage in the garden, a hundred twinkly lights illuminate one's entire field of view. So pretty is this IMAXian effect that, after a few sundowners, one could easily imagine having died and gone to heaven! The pool area is very pretty and laps up to a summer kitchen/dining space that has everything you need for dining with family and friends. Even poolside, portable, bluetooth speakers were provided enabling our teenage girls to 'crank up da beats' and imagine they were partying with the Kardashians (God forbid!). Holidays, as we have learnt to our cost in the past, are not always as restful as they might be when invitations to day visitors to come and join for lunch or dinner are handed out like confetti without the brakes of reality being correctly applied. Endless trips to the supermarket to stock up on vast piles of food to cater for these friends/invaders soon wears thin. The pressures of creating inspiring 'show off' food in the kitchen can render the most professional amateur chef certifiably insane after a while. Add to that the clearing up of the day's party shrapnel when all you want to do is go to bed, and you're left clicking through the 3rd Home site looking for another holiday! But, rest easy at Hendricks House folks, the aces up the owner's sleeve are resident Chef Daniel and his lovely wife Virginia. Daniel is a very accomplished chef and is happy to cook 'whatever you want'. Virginia keeps house in the very best of traditions and seems to strike that very difficult note of being there when you need her and not when you don't. We had a blast with these two lovely people and they instinctively knew how to make us feel at home and looked after us so very, very kindly. So, please don't book this place, don't even think about it. It is clearly not for you because my family and I would very much like to return and, if it becomes too popular, it may be a very longtime before we do.”
